As with Fire alarm systems emergency lighting forms an integral part of your buildings safety systems and as with any safety system there are specific standards that have to be adhered too.

The British Standards lay out strict design requirements which could be interpreted by the novice in either direction, by providing too much emergency lighting and therefore exceeding budgets or not providing sufficient therefore possibly jeopardising the safety of the occupants.

The area most people forget about with emergency lighting is the system maintenance, in accordance with the standards the system must have a functional test on a monthly basis with a duration test on an annual basis, the most economical way for this to be carried out is at the same time as the fire alarm system maintenance.
